The Story

The Spiced Pear Bourbon is a modern autumn riff on the Old Fashioned. As bartenders leaned into orchard fruits and warming spice, pear emerged as bourbon's natural companion. Cozy and softly spiced, this drink feels at home on cooler evenings and shared tables.

Step by Step

The Recipe

Your recipe card has this too — consider this your backup.

1

Add two or three fresh pear slices to your shaker along with the maple syrup and a pinch of cinnamon. Muddle gently until the pear breaks down and the mixture smells fragrant. You're not pulverizing it — just coaxing the juice and flavor out.

2

Pour in your bourbon, pear juice, and lemon juice. The lemon is doing quiet work here — it balances the sweetness of the maple and pear without announcing itself.

3

Fill your shaker with ice until it's about halfway full. Seal it and shake for 10 to 15 seconds. You'll feel the shaker get cold and slightly frosty on the outside. That's your cue to stop.

4

Strain into your lowball glass over a fresh piece of ice. The fresh ice keeps things cold without over-diluting what you just built.

5

Fan your dehydrated pear gently over the rim and rest it in place. Tuck a cinnamon stick alongside it.

Make It a Mocktail

Swap the bourbon for a strong brewed black tea or sparkling water. The pear juice and maple syrup do most of the heavy lifting here — the warmth and spice come through just as well without the spirit. Add a splash of ginger beer if you want a little extra backbone.

Know the Rules, Then Break Them

This recipe has a formula that works. It also has a lot of room. Here are the four places worth experimenting once you've made it once.

On the Bourbon

Use a bourbon you already enjoy drinking on its own. Something warm and oaky carries the pear beautifully. Want to try something different? Rye whiskey makes the drink a little drier and spicier, which plays well against the sweetness of the maple. Either way, this is a forgiving base.

On the Sweetener

Maple syrup is the choice here for its warmth and depth, but honey works just as well and brings a floral note that pairs surprisingly well with pear. Agave keeps it lighter and lets the fruit lead. Start with what you have and see what you prefer.

On the Spice

A quarter teaspoon of cinnamon is the starting point. Want more warmth? Add a pinch of cardamom or nutmeg alongside it. Want to dial it back? Skip the cinnamon entirely and let the pear and bourbon carry the drink. This is the easiest place to make it feel like yours.

On the Juice

Pear juice is the backbone, but apple juice is a seamless swap if you can't find it. Peach juice in summer leans sweeter and floral. The citrus from the lemon is non-negotiable though. It's the thing keeping everything in balance without you even noticing it's there.

The Moment

Set the Scene

This drink was made for:

  • A small dinner party in October where the table looks good and the drinks match the effort.
  • The holiday gathering where you want one signature drink that everyone asks about.
  • Friendsgiving. You brought the cocktails. Nobody is surprised you showed up prepared.
  • The autumn evening that called for something warmer than wine.
